Sara Antoinette
Sara Antoinette Martin is an artist, illustrator, and prospective tattooer who resides in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from Pratt Institute in 2005, Sara’s many artistic talents found residence first as an intern for Tristan Eaton, as a product photographer for Kidrobot, and, finally, as an assistant to the artist Tara McPherson, whom she continues to work with. In addition, Ms. Martin currently serves as an apprentice, mastering the art of tattooing under Adam Suerte and Willie Paredes, at Brooklyn Tattoo.
For Sara, creating the image is as much about the process as it is about the final product. As exemplified through her method, her pieces are essentially a breakdown of composition, just to be built back up again, adding patterns and embellishments until they climax into an epic mess of conflicted messages. She paints strong women, pretty intestines and her seemingly disparate influences include traditional tattoo art, fins, gills, flowers and Masonic and alchemical symbolism. The end products are conversations on feminism, unconventional beauty and the anxiety of existence.
Sara Antoinette Martin has shown in galleries across the country, including the Jonathan LeVine Gallery, La Luz de Jesus, MF Gallery and Paul Booth’s Last Rites Gallery. She also produces comics and toys — her first vinyl toy, released by Kid Robot, was El Chupacabra. Some of her clients include Mishka NYC, Royal Flush Magazine, Topps, Bust Magazine and Kidrobot. Her work can be seen in a variety of books, such as Tashcen’s “Illustration Now! 3” and Kidrobot’s “I Am Plastic”. She has been featured in periodicals including The New York Times Book Review, Super 7 Magazine, Tattoo Life, and Inked Magazine.
